ACC appeals against verdict dismissing Hasina‍‍`s Barge-Mounted graft case

An initiative has been taken to proceed with the hearing of an appeal filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) against a High Court verdict that declared a corruption case involving the establishment of a barge-mounted power plant against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina illegal.

The ACC is preparing to hold a hearing on this matter on July 15. Earlier, a High Court bench comprising Justice A.H.M. Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Justice Sheikh Md. Zakir Hossain had issued the ruling declaring the case void.

The ACC had initially filed the case on July 2, 2007, against Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina, and five others, accusing them of irregularities in setting up the barge-mounted power plant.

On March 3, 2008, the High Court issued a rule asking why the proceedings of the case should not be declared illegal. At the same time, it stayed the lower court trial. Eventually, the case against Sheikh Hasina was withdrawn.
